music
- 9-11-01
music has been more important to me lately than ever before.
it's like a religion to me. it is what i use to comfort
me in tough times, it inspires me, it makes me think, it's an
outlet. so after the tragic times we have been living through
lately, like a lot of people, i turned to music to deal.
certain songs were played over and over again in my car in the
days following september 11. ironically a few of them were
on a CD i had been playing 2 days before the attacks on my road
trip back from jersey. the one song i have to recommend
right now was actually my pick of the month last year during the
olympics. when i heard pearl jam perform it at my
first pj concert in august of 2000,
it became my mission to find out what song it was and get a copy
of it. it turned out to be "i am a patriot" and it
definitely made me all patriotic. this summer, on july 4th,
it played in my mind as i sat on the charles river waiting for
the fireworks to begin. following up thoughts of this pj
treasure with that "proud to be an american" song brought
tears to my eyes. it is just such a beautiful song, a love
song but the subject is our country. i highly recommend
it, although some versions of it are not as good and i have no
idea which version i have. you can download
the mp3 version
if you are patient enough. i have included the lyrics
below
, along with some others that i have found pretty fitting lately... (these are all reprinted without permission. sue me.)
but first...
here is my latest feature. you can directly visit
any of my recommended cd purchases and buy them from CD Now online.
this week's pick is america:
tribute to heroes.
it's the cd version of that telethon

staind: break the cycle, dysfunction powerful stuff. some of it has been overplayed but hey, it's good, what can ya do. if you liked the overplayed i promise you'll like the rest. if you want the overplayed ones, they're on break the cycle.

pearl jam: full product listing still probably my favorite band ever. so many different styles, they just keep reinventing themselves. of course most people are familiar with their earlier stuff from the early 90s, but some of their later work has been pretty exciting too. some weird stuff in the middle. just don't ask me to pick a favorite song. i've got hundreds and still i'm only about a third of the way through all the stuff they have recorded! check out their fanclub at tenclub.net.

foo fighters: full product listing grunge band featuring dave grohl, former nirvana drummer and all-around hottie. did ya see him on late-nite? he's funny too!

i am a patriot - pearl jam and the rivers shall open for the righteous, someday... i was walking, with my brother, and he wondered how i am i said what i believe in my soul ain't what i see with my eyes and there's no turning back this time i am a patriot, i love my country, because my country is all i know i wanna be with my family, people who understand me i got no place else to go... i was walking, with my girlfriend she looked so fine, i said baby what's on your mind she said i want to run like the lions released from their cages released from the rages burning in my soul tonight... i am a patriot, i love my country, because my country is all i know and i ain't no communist, and i ain't no socialist and i ain't no capitalist, and i ain't no imperialist and i ain't no democrat, sure ain't no republican either i only know one party, and that is freedom.. i am, i am, i am... i am a patriot, and i love my country because my country is all i know and the rivers shall open for the righteous, someday...

one - creed affirmative may be justified, take from one give to another the goal is to be unified, take my hand, be my brother the payment silenced the masses sanctified by oppression unity took a back seat sliding further in regression one... oh, one... .the only way is one i feel angry, i feel helpless, want to change the world i feel violent, i feel alone, don't try to change my mind society blind by color, why hold down one to raise another discrimination now on both sides, seeds of hate blossom further the world is heading for a mutiny, when all we want is unity we may rise and fall, but in the end, we'll meet our fate together one... oh, one... .the only way is one i feel angry, i feel helpless, want to change the world i feel violent, i feel alone, don't try to change my mind

proud to be an american - lee greenwood (yes it's cheesy and played out but i admit i still love it) if tomorrow all the things were gone i'd worked for all my life, and I had to start again with just my children and my wife i'd thank my lucky stars to be living here today, 'cause the flag still stands for freedom and they can't take that away and i'm proud to be an American where at least i know i'm free, and I won't forget the men who died who gave that right to me and i'll gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today, 'cause there ain't no doubt I love this land, god bless the U.S.A. from the lakes of minnesota to the hills of tennessee, across the plains of texas, from sea to shining sea from detroit down to houston and new york to l.a., there's pride in every American heart and it's time we stand and say: i'm proud to be an American where at least i know i'm free, and i won't forget the men who died who gave that right to me and i'll gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today, 'cause there ain't no doubt I love this land God Bless the U.S.A.
